Bear with us just a tad longer...we're nearly there as some of you will see in about 10 days when we invite a small group to help us "kick the tires". In fact,, so that we can put together a group of people willing to help us test for a few hours in about 10 days, I'll invite any of you to send an email to:

itsabouttime@crowdspring.com

Please include your username in the email and also your time zone or country so that we can group people to test together. We'll ask you to help for an hour or so and will let you play around with the new site - post projects (these will be test projects and we'll give you a test credit card to use for that purpose), participate, etc. and help us to identify any remaining bugs. And you'll get a preview of some of the stuff we'll be releasing to everyone shortly and you'll get a sense of what buyers see when they post projects. Cool? :)
I love the idea, and am seriously considering posting a good-sized project... but since this type of issue wasn't mentioned in the FAQ, I'm a bit hesitant to pull the trigger if we must still pay for designs we don't use.

Hey there all!
My name is Chloe’, I am a 22 California resident and have been working as a freelance Graphic Designer since I graduated from college. I’m not particularly knew to cS, I’ve been here working as a creative for quite awhile now. But this is the first real *post* here on the forums, and since I actually have a question I thought an introduction of sorts was in order! ;-)

But anyway, I wanted to get some input from you guys.
I recently registered at istockphoto.com because I want to begin using that as a source of getting high quality images. But Im finding myself confused with this whole credit buying system. It’s completely new to me.

Moreso it’s this whole license options thing. There is the iStockphoto's Standard and Extended Licenses and that obviously plays a part when purchasing stock images for the buyer’s design. I was wondering if you guys can explain how you go about buying stock images for your projects. For example, if your design is chosen and awarded, you then move to purchase the stock image and reconstruct the design accordingly to give to the buyer. What set of licensing do you purchase? Does it matter? How does it depend on the project?? Should I ask the buyer/tell the buyer or just decide for myself..?

Basically I am wondering could anyone be so kind and give me the 411 when it comes to using istockphoto.com?? Or any advice concerning it because I am completely new to it all and would really like to learn how this is done.

I greatly appreciate any and all help you’re willing to give!
Thanks, Chloe’

Hello all. I recently won a contest here for this company. After doing a good job "closing" and giving them the best customer service within my means, I was able to squeeze another project from them. They needed a business flyer. Their current one was preety hideous, and we both agreed it needed alot of work. Problem is I haven't ever done a flyer before. But I figured, how hard could it be, right?

Well, after much research and looking at existing templates...here is what I have come up with so far. I am using InDesign, and I haven't used the program in a while. So it's been a learning procees so far for me.

In a nutshell, this company provides services for inmates. For example, they send gifts to loved ones, provide facebook, email, music, books, info about people via google services, etc... The only feedback I have received from the buyer as yet is that they want the logo on the top left bigger. I am still adding a second back page, there is more info that needs to be added that I wasn't able to put into one.

By the way, the type under the 3 boxes with pics are set at 8pt. The flyer will be double sided 8.5" X 11" with a full bleed.

Since I have never done a flyer, I was hoping if anyone could shed some critiques... good or bad is very much appreciated. Thank you!

Apologies if this topic already has a thread. I admit, I didn't search for one...and secondary apologies for long-windedness. I'll take a spanking, but it has to be from someone cute. On we go.
--------------
In recent weeks, I've made 3 attempts to look out for the best interests of my fellow creatives. Two failed miserably, one didn't. I think I've learned my lesson about minding my own business, but the final effort and its results bear mentioning, or at least I think they do.

Recently, I entered a project with two entries, identical type, different marks. The buyer ranked one low and one with a "3" if memory serves and asked me to reset my type in the typeface another creative had used. The typeface was "MUSEO", an incredibly popular typeface. The entry in question had been posted by "monsterleo" and there was no significant modifications to the typeface. I know Cibi, or at least I've interacted with him on several occasions through the site. I decided to write to Cibi and see how he felt about my adopting the same typeface with my very different mark. As the day wore on without a response, I felt the right thing to do was post some alternatives to "Museo" but I PM'd the buyer and told him I believed there was no LEGAL reason that he couldn't make the request to use this publicly available typeface, but that I'd chosen not to post it, having not heard back from Cibi at that point. The contest wore on, and I pretty much forgot about it, thinking my chances of winning the award to be slim.

Cibi eventually wrote me back. His response was to use MUSEO without fear of recriminations from him. I still chose not to alter my entry, but I said to Cibi something like, "If I were to win, I'll suggest that we split the award, if the buyer still wants MUSEO." Ultimately, I did receive the award and the buyer did want Museo. This is what I wrote to the buyer:

Quote:

"First of all, thanks for the award, I'm super excited and happy to receive it. Please note that this is a totally private message between yourself and myself, there is no pressure. If we'd been in discussions prior to the award, I'd have made this suggestion then, but I'd like to still make it now. To be "razor" sharp in terms of clarity, this is a suggestion/request, not a demand, it's an idea.
It would take at least some involvement from CS to facilitate, but I'm wondering if you'd consider contacting CS and adding $50 to your award. If you were to do that, I'd authorize CS to divert $100 of the now $350 to Cibi when you and I reach completion. In this way, both yourself and myself would be giving $50 to Cibi as an acknowledgment of his foresight and contribution of bringing that typeface to your attention early on in the project.
CrowdSPRING is a highly competitive arena and can devolve into the "petty" all the time. If you and I were to craft a solution like this, I believe it would go a long way toward fostering more trust, and a more collaborative spirit amongst creatives, and might set an example for others of how to handle issues like this where there is no LEGAL reason we can't use "Museo", but where we'd prefer that values like honor, decency and rewarding those who have contributed to the solution trump strict 'legality'."

It's my HOPE that Cibi felt okay with the split. I felt it to be fair, as there wasn't any real "treatment" to the typeface beyond changing the dot color on an "i". I also hope that the buyer felt okay about the extra award $$, knowing for certain there would be no feelings of foul play. I also hope the CS staff appreciates that we solved the problem before it ever became one, diminishing their already MASSIVE workload, except for requesting the split...which I was led to believe wasn't going to be problematic.

Here's what I believe. I believe that there was no legal or moral reason that would technically prevented me from using Museo "post-award" and keeping the original $300. BUT, what I also believe are two other things. I believe that a small bond of trust now exists between myself and Cibi. He can trust that while I may fight him to the death for an award, I'll fight fairly...and I can trust that Cibi will be a reasonable person when presented with a "gray" area and a potential solution. He could have said "no" or any other number of things...but I found him to be a logical guy. I've admired Cibi's work from early on, but I feel the experience of dealing with this ourselves has made us more like comrades at arms, less like sworn enemies. If CrowdSPRING is to become all that it can be, it remains to us, those who use it...to mold it into the kind of place EVERYONE wants to play in...which is why the gracious buyer, a level headed guy named Cibi and myself did what we did...to MAKE it a win-win-win.

HOWEVER, my FOREMOST reason for writing ALL THAT though is that I think we need to begin discussing typefaces. The reality is that there are a finite number of them, and several are VERY popular. I will add my own answer in a subsequent post, but this is the main question I'd like to pose.

1. Does the presence of a given typeface in a gallery entry preclude subsequent entries from using that same typeface...either by the CS user agreement, legally or morally?

P.S. Cibi and Deron, please add your perspectives if you would like?
P.S.S. I am NOT advocating an increase in the use of MUSEO, hoping for an award split.

Here is a instance I just had here on cS of a buyer who left this in his feedback.

"...Again, since we are defining the symbol with sermons, lectures, and other written content, the symbol doesn't need to mean something out-of-the-box. It would actually be cool if the symbol didn't mean much to begin with."

Yep, the bold text says it all. He wants an icon that doesn't really mean anything, much like the swooshes you see in pharmaceutical companies, in sports companies, in female boutiques or even in computer companies. It's everywhere but what does it mean? Well, nothing actually, so might as well give this buyer a swoosh and the name then it's all good.

Anyway, I just would like to point out that this is a bad form of research and development when it comes to logo designing. I also do hope that clients/buyers would be aware of this.
